Want to feel like you’re living ‘off the grid’ for the weekend? I stumbled upon Malouf’s Mountain in Dutchess County, NY (1 ½ hours from NYC) when I was looking for a quick outdoorsy getaway. It’s not real “glamping” because you still have to hike to the site, build your own fire and sleep in a sleeping bag but you do get extra help pitching your tent, getting food and the like. My girls and I have a fantastic time there – we collect bugs, make the best s’mores, play card games and wander off like they did on the Brady Bunch.  There are about 30 campsites where we’ve met interesting people who are mostly from Brooklyn and Manhattan. Malouf’s is easy access by Metro North and the owners will pick you up and take you to the hike of choice while they bring your gear to the site. They are super nice, the facilities and grounds are clean and they’ll even share their beer and chat with you if you’re lucky! PS – My husband went once and decided he likes living on the grid better. More marshmallows for us! Rates run from $55-95/night depending on stay and site. The next morning we make a campfire breakfast, clean up and pack up for the hike back to civilization. For us, that means using a regular bathroom in the cute, artsy town of Beacon. We also look forward to lunch at the Beacon Bread Company. The kids dig into pancakes while I savor every morsel of the Tofu Scramble. Camping is fun! 193 Main St, Beacon, NY
