What do Jon Stewart, John Oliver and my family have in common besides good looks and talent? We’re all fans of the Story Pirates – an amazing and hilarious improv group. Based out of NY and LA, the Pirates select creatively-crafted stories written by kids and bring them to life on stage as sketch comedy musicals. This organization has grown tremendously since I first saw them at BAM in Brooklyn – now with books, a podcast and a national tour. Just proof positive that they’ve been onto something – arts education matters and needs our support. The troupe works with underserved schools and gets students pumped about writing, creating, expressing. It’s entertainment for all ages – yes that means even you. Check out their upcoming shows at Cherry Lane Theatre, 38 Commerce St
I must admit I’m the crazy Anglophile in the house. I’ve been going to Tea & Sympathy since way back when I lived on West 11th. The fact that the NY Times is reporting it’s in danger of closing makes me want to go right now and buy up all their scones with clotted cream and jam. I LOVE this tearoom. It’s cramped inside with mismatched china and plastic tablecloths but that’s what I adore. Their afternoon tea is spot on but so are the bangers and mash and savory pies. I’ve turned my kids onto this place because they’ve been spoon fed on Downton Abbey, Hugh Grant rom-coms and everything Harry (Prince and Potter). Don’t forget to go next door to check out their annex shop and fish & chips takeaway counter. 108 Greenwich Avenue, near 7th Ave
